The Soldier

Paul Bowers

I am the man torn away from his family,

Swept away by the ravaging war.

If you see my wife, then tell her

I won’t come back knocking at the door.

I am the teenager who was sent off to fight.

Maybe I was a hero, maybe just an average guy,

Today, people only shake their heads

And say I was too young to die.

I am a patriot, defending our country,

Risking my life for a greater cause,

And on this Veteran’s Day,

I want you to take a moment to pause.

Think about your freedom,

And think about its cost

Think about us men who paid it,

Whose lives we nobly lost.

Please remember me,

Preserver of the American way.

Remember me, the soldier,

And be thankful on this day.
